Import weather histories into Google Sheets in bulk

Whether you like it or not, your sales are vulnerable to the elements. No one is going to buy gloves during a heatwave and no one is going to buy shorts during a blizzard. And if the weather takes a turn which impacts your sales, you may need to do some explaining to the boss as to why they're not making money. Alternatively, if your sales are boosted, its important to understand if this is a result of your marketing efforts or just dumb luck.

Therefore, I've created a weather history generator in Google Sheets. With just the click of a button, you can import daily weather histories for a range of dates directly into your spreadsheet. You can then easily paste this into your Google Analytics reports to directly show any correlations between weather and sales.

Get your weather history generator here.

How to use

Step 1 - Got to https://openweathermap.org/api and subscribe to the One Call API

Step 2 - Go to https://home.openweathermap.org/api_keys to get your weather API key. This is free for most use cases so it shouldn't cost you a penny. Once obtained, enter it into the settings tab.

Step 3 - Get the latitude and longitude of the location you want your weather report from. You can do this quickly just by Googling "[location] coordinates"

Step 4 - Enter the dates you want into the sheet in YYYY-MM-DD format.

Once completed, just click "Get weather history" and watch your weather stats appear before your eyes!

This has been built primarily for digital marketing purposes, but its applications could be wide-ranging. We'd love to hear how you've used this, feel free to get in touch.
